What Is Our Common Ground?

It’s now 2012, Friday will begin the year of the Dragon. A big year according to Michio.

What will happen? Those people who are pessimistic may not want to spend more for offerings that are organic, or from the heart, as they feel there is little they can do to prevent “The end of the world.” Perhaps they are right to feel that way.

But that is precisely what got us into this mess. In my view, now is the perfect time to change to a more sustainable way of living. Not only could it result in the non-event we are hoping for later this year, but it could also bring us together to end or at least greatly reduce human and animal suffering on this planet.

Have you seen the new International Macrobiotic Directory? It has recently been updated, and you will love having at your fingertips, all of the health food stores, healing professionals and gift shops with organic and natural offerings, not only all over the U.S., but all over the world.

It can be yours for just $15.95, both in print and in pdf. Please click the link and order today.

Happy new year!!

Healing Starts With Peace & Clarity

Sometimes life is so busy and we make so many sacrifices and compromises, that we forget what keeps us happy and healthy.

The frenetic pace of American life is difficult on both the mind and the body. Make sure you take breaks in order to breathe, relax, heal, and get back on track. Gaining peace and then clarity, I can move in the right direction to live my dream.

For me, that means unplug from some of my family responsibilities, take time for meditation, music, chanting and plenty of exercise, and stay away from extreme yin and yang foods. Being grateful is also a good practice for me.

What works for you? Please share with us. Peace to you!!

Happy New Year 2012

What a year 2011 has been. So much change. 2012 will certainly bring more change.

What helps you maintain your life in a time of great change? For me, it’s good eating and lifestyle habits. Macrobiotics is a big part of these.

We ought to be grateful for our lives, and this beautiful planet.

Winter Is Coming—Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

I’ve lived in Boston most of my life. We are blessed here with great weather, and a diverse set of economic, cultural and natural choices.

This year, the weather has been remarkably nice, if occasionally unpredictable and stormy. However, Winter will soon be here, and it will be cold and probably snowy, even though the lack of acorns cast some doubt.

The question is, whether to be here, and push myself to be outside often, and cook lots of great macro food, or whether to jump down to Miami, Austin, or even Costa Rica.

As of now, it looks like I’ll be here. As such, I’m happy to serve you on your quest to stay well fed and get to the airport. Tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 2) I’ll be cooking lunch and Sweet Vegetable Drink, and I am happy to deliver some to you (see the page on Meal Delivery).

I also drive Warren, Stanley, Bobbi, Rhoda, Howie and others to the Airport. Let me know if you need a ride.

All my best to you for December…

Thanksgiving Day Today And Everyday

Happy Autumn!

Having a great life is not easy for everyone these days. There is a lot of suffering on this planet, by people and animals. It is easy to see why Buddhism teaches that life is suffering.

But nature is here to help us. When we eat more naturally, we turn on the healing, and give our senses more to work with. And when we live more naturally, we heal the planet and remind ourselves what we have to be thankful for.

No need to wait until the end of November to be grateful for your life. Enjoy and be thankful for everyone and everything you have today, while it’s still with you.

Best wishes to all!!

Promoting A Balanced Vegan Diet

Thursday through Sunday my son and I will go on the Boys to Men Right of Passage Weekend, or ROPAW, in Vermont.

My understanding is there a handful of boys (of the 25 registered) who are vegetarian or vegan, and I am fortunate enough to be a part of the kitchen crew.

The original plan was to serve vegetarians cheese, and TVP (soy nuggets or bits), if hamburgers, hot dogs, chili and eggs were not of interest.
I am now helping to provide Brown Rice, Tofu, Tempeh, Mushrooms, Lentils, Sea Vegetables and more fresh green produce.

I am confident this will be a welcome addition to the meals, and I look forward to our trip.

If you are traveling in August, please pick up a copy of the 2011 International Macrobiotic Directory. When you order, you get a free electronic version the same day!

Breakfast of Champions (of Health, Peace and Longevity)

Like you, I enjoyed some fun foods over the weekend, including chocolate, fruit, and bread. But Monday morning, and the start of a new month, helps motivate me to do better for my body.

Today’s breakfast was hot cereal with oat groats, carrots and onion, cooked with sea salt, and sautéed kale stems and leaves, radish and scallions, with sesame oil and shoyu. Very beautiful, satisfying, and health-building.

At 10am I will enjoy a cup of hot Sweet Vegetable Tea, then lunch of brown rice, steamed pole beans, leftover white beans, and a pickle.

When I feel good, it’s easier for me to do good.

Change Is Good

Six months ago we had fierce winter conditions, and a bowl of hot soup could bring us back. Now, the sun is beating down on us, and a fresh organic blueberry has the same effect.

The seasons are so amazing, especially here in the Northeast. But wherever you go, nature is there to support you. Please use what you know about nature, and yourself to take care of your body, mind and spirit.

Macropedia, and the 2011 Int’l Macrobiotic Directory are here for you. Enjoy.

Our True Nature

Macrobiotics, as you may already know, is not a one-size-fits-all diet and cult, although many people see it that way. It’s more like a lens, to see the universe as it is, and enjoy the wisdom of nature’s plan, participating as you see fit for yourself.

There is so much suffering right now, which seems to be payment for using so much technology in our lives, to travel, communicate, play, work, treat disease, even grow “phude.” My dream is to help more people see that nature can do all these things for us, without the side effects.

I use Macrobiotics to prepare some of my meals, so that I can keep my body, mind and spirit in a place where I can fulfill my commitments to myself, my family, and the world, and also enjoy my life.

Macrobiotics should not be a chore, nor a way to judge others to a certain standard, or exclude them from the club. It’s just nature’s technology, which can be learned from a book, but is also available to each one of us by studying the world around us.

As the school year ends, I am creating an intention to teach my children (12 and 15) how to cook this summer, as we enjoy ourselves and decompress/heal from our recent difficulties. I know there are more challenges on the horizon, but showing my children how to take care of their bodies, and having a good time with them will give us all the energy to endure whatever comes our way.

May you have an easy summer, one filled with joy, rest and activities that have meaning for you. If there is any way I can help you, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

David L. Kagan

Summer Is Upon Us

How wonderful that kids (and parents) will be getting a break from the pressure of school, and have a chance to enjoy nature for the Summer.

What are your plans for the Summer? Will you attend the Kushi Institute Summer Conference in NY?

If you will be doing any traveling, or need anything related to Macrobiotics, please consider ordering the 2011 International Macrobiotic Directory.

Peace and love,
David (for Robert)
